Pet First Aid - Bite Wounds and Abscesses

Re: Vets suck at doing this…

//////////////////////////////////////////////

Hey everybody! A happy Wednesday to you.

This week I am focusing on Dog and Cat emergencies. I regularly see them - and surprisingly MOST people DON’T know what to do.

And I have been wondering why…

I think that we as a profession (Veterinarians) have done a poor job at teaching clients what to do in an emergency.

Truthfully, your Vet wants you to come to their practice and spend money - there just isn’t ANY economic incentive to having dog and cat guardians to be better prepared.

——————————-
SO… It’s up to you
——————————

There are many COMMON dog and cat emergencies- in fact I see MANY that you could be treating at home, if you knew WHAT to do.

And What do you think the MOST common emergency is?

POISON?

Car ACCIDENTS?

ALLERGIC reactions?

URINARY blockage in cats?

—————————-
NOPE..None of the above
—————————-

Believe it or not I see a LARGE number of Dog and Cat Bite Wounds and Abscesses.

The ‘SECRET’ is dealing with the bite wound BEFORE it turns into an Abscess.

If More of you did this, you could SAVE your pet unnecessary pain and discomfort, and avoid SPENDING hundreds of dollars.

———————————-
So what do I need to know?
———————————

You can get ALL the ANSWERS by going here:

http://www.petfirstaidsecrets.com

Here is a snippet of What’s in my First Aid Book…

SIGNS

A red and possibly swollen area appears on your pet. Sometimes puncture marks are visible. There may be bleeding if blood vessels are damaged.

Lameness, if the puncture affects a leg. This is commonly seen in cats in cat fights. Abscesses are often found at the tail base of cats as they are running away and are bitten in the bum.

CAUSES

Your pet’s teeth are very sharp, and even small punctures can lead to abscesses. The mouth is a large cauldron of bacteria, and when your pet is bitten, these enter and multiply in a wound, becoming an abscess.

SOLUTIONS

KNOW WHEN TO SEE YOUR VETERINARIAN. If your pet is very lethargic, not eating or drinking, then see your veterinarian immediately. Bacteria from abscesses can spread in the body, giving your pet septicemia (blood poisoning). If your pet has a large swelling that is not draining, then you must see your veterinarian to have it drained surgically. Abscesses that are open and draining and small bite wounds can be treated safely at home.

BARBER TIME. Trim the hair around the bite or wound. Trim large sections with scissors, and carefully use a disposable razor to trim the hair next to the skin.

KEEP IT CLEAN. If possible, put your pet in the sink or bathtub and run lukewarm tap water on the bite or abscess for 5 minutes. If your pet won’t tolerate running water, use a damp cloth or gauze sponge. Purchase an antiseptic soap, Germi-Stat, available at your local pharmacy, and wash the area well. Keep the wound clean and perform this water therapy twice daily for 5-7 days.

STAY OPEN. The most important thing you can do to prevent the bite from turning into a costly abscess is to vigorously scrub the puncture wound with a damp cloth and antiseptic soap. The puncture marks MUST stay open for at least 3 days to drain properly.
For large abscesses that are open and draining, keep them open for at least 3 days after you have thoroughly cleaned them and clipped the surrounding hair.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. DON’T underestimate the power of utilizing these seemingly SIMPLE techniques. They will prevent many bite wounds from turning into abscess. Then to go even further you can use the herbal and homeopathics that I advise here:

Michael Vick Dog Fighting Victim Helps Cancer Patients

Re: Michael Vick dog fighting ‘victim’ helps cancer patients

//////////////////////////////////////////////

Hey everyone.

You guys sure respond.

My last newsletter was about my mother-in-law’s new CRAZY rule to NEVER allow their dog to get into their new car.

It’s been driving me a little batty - so I thought I would share it.

You guys delivered!

Thanks for the ‘how to get Mackie back into the car suggestions’.

I really liked the suggestion to get a specific type of pet cover for ALL of the vehicle seats…

SIMPLE SOLUTION!

I’ll bring this up in a ‘compromising way’ and hopefully get Mackie back in the vehicle before I go back home to B.C.

————————————-
Remember Michael Vick?
————————————-

NFL football star.

Horrible Dog Fighting Ring.

He was convicted and is now in jail.

But what ever happened to the dogs?

Here is a story and video link of one really positive thing that happened for one of the LUCKY rescued dogs…

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - It’s a dog’s life. And for Leo it couldn’t be better.

Leo — rescued from heavy chains that confined him as one of the pit bulls in former NFL quarterback Michael Vick’s dogfighting ring — is a lover, not a fighter. He now happily frolics in a clown collar as he makes the rounds at the Camino Infusion Center, where he brings comfort to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Here is a link to a video showing just this:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25216940#25216940

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. I don’t know if you can ever get justice for what Michael Vick and others do to dogs that they have for dog fighting.

But he is in jail.

It sends a STRONG message.

Dog fighting is ILLEGAL.

Things are changing.

I suspect that even 10 years ago he wouldn’t have gone to jail.

Thanks to people like you, Michael Vick went to jail.

Thanks for being a subscriber, and I’ll talk to you on Monday. Have a safe, pet appreciating and animal advocating weekend :-)

NO Dogs ALLOWED in the car

By Dr Andrew | July 16, 2008

From: Dr Andrew Jones

Re: She WON’T let ‘the dog’ in the car..

//////////////////////////////////////////////

Hello faithful subscribers, and a happy Wednesday to you all.

As you all may know, I am currently visiting my In-Laws in Nova Scotia.

They are wonderful people, and pretty easy to live with.

But they have one NEW issue which is driving me a little crazy, and I am wondering what some of you may think of it.

——————————-
NO Dogs EVER
——————————-

They recently bought a NEW car.

Shiny

Good on Gas

It smells NEW

and NO Dog Hair.

—————————-
The NEW rule
—————————-

My Mother-In-Law has decided that she doesn’t want the dog to EVER be in the car.

LIKE no dog ever.

It sucks for their dog Mackie.

And for her husband. He used to take Mackie for big walks at various parks.

—————————————-
What the %%%#########***@@@####?
—————————————-

SO my opinion is that this is a CRAZY ‘rule’ - This is one thing that I would NEVER agree to, and I am not one to get into In-Law marital therapy.

In fact my blood boils a little, and I don’t come over sounding too sane.

I would love to hear your ideas on How to get Mackie back in the car.

Post to your hearts content (click the comments link below)…

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. I just DON’T get some stuff and how that would EVER seem reasonable. That really isn’t a great quality of life for any dog, if all you do is hang around the house eating and sleeping.

Kind of like jail.

Any ideas to break Mackie out of jail?

Share them here - click the Comments link at the end of this article!

The answer to my Pet/Marriage Issues..

By Dr Andrew | July 11, 2008

Re: The answer to my Pet/Marriage Issues..

//////////////////////////////////////////////

A cheery Friday to you all.

I am looking forward to some time today at the beach-
as I write this the sun is shining and the mosquitoes
are buzzing- the ocean is not only beautiful, but windy
and bug free :-)

WOW.

Apparently many of you have strong opinions on the
pet/realtionship issue.

Thanks for all of your comments.

I recently wrote a newsletter commenting on how my
wife and I have different ideas on where the pets
should be living in our new house.

I am of the let them roam free opinion, while she is of
the give them only certain places to go opinion.

Here are a few in particular that stood out to me:

—————–
Comment 1
—————–

“Love me, love my dog! She married a vet, for Gods
sake. I realize there are different styles, everybody
has a right to theirs. But I won’t compromise on mine,
which is the pets have the run of the house. Love, to
me, always trumps things, The house is only a house,
and you can’t take it with you. Love, I think,
transcends all time and space, and what are pets,
but love in form. (even when they are naughty!)”

———————–
Comment 2
———————–

“I have a ideal. It works fine for here, I don’t know
how large your living room is,but you can get something
that Lewis would like to lay on(old chair or couch) and
put a cover over it and that would be his bed,he would
be close to you and still have his own place to lay.
You can take it off and wash it,good as new. Spray
some smell goodie stuff and call it good. Dog happy
women happy man happy lol Cleo maybe something smaller
if she like being close to you all.”

—————————
Comment 3
—————————

“Both Happy!! GET HER A CLEANING LADY for the big
stuff, then she don’t mind cleaning the rest!

Housework is not a rewarding job, every woman
hates it, BUT all women like a clean house so
with a little help you are both happy and she
won’t mind where the dog sleeps!!

Every woman dreams of having a cleaning lady so
why not make her happy? It is not THAT expensive
but it means a lot! Hope this helps?”

——————————————–
So WHAT am I going to do?
——————————————–

1. Have a good talk and re-inforce the fact that
she did marry a Vet- I have been ‘restrained’ and not taken home
every stray that becomes part of the clinic or shelter.

2. Get another couch for Lewis..he’d LOVE that idea!

3. Hire someone to clean as well..that is a GREAT suggestion :-)

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. Have any of you ever had dogs or cats or any other animals
affect your relationships?

If so I would LOVE to hear about them on my blog.

When I was in the dating mode years ago, animals were
one of my BIG tests…If the person wasn’t an ‘animal’
person then they were out of contention.

Feel free to comment..and enjoy the unconditional love
from your pets.

It’s Your Pet…Heal Them At Home!

Best Wishes,

Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

Pets challenge my marriage?

By Dr Andrew | July 9, 2008

From: Dr Andrew Jones

Re: Pets challenge my marriage?

//////////////////////////////////////////////

Good morning all, and welcome to Wednesday.

My wife, Catherine and I, are to recently celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.

Things are going pretty well, we agree, we agree to disagree (i.e. compromise), and we have had our share of ups and downs - although mostly ups.

She grew up in Nova Scotia with dogs, cats, a horse and even a pet goat.

Animals though weren’t allowed in her house.

Her parents have a sparkling clean house…

I can say this as we are currently visiting them, and their house is as clean as ever… no dog hair.

I grew up on a farm… Dogs, cats, horses, calves, lambs, baby ducks, hamsters, rabbits… you name it, it made it into our house.

Even though we were a ‘farm’, all of our pets slept in somebody’s bed. My dad has a soft spot for animals, and they were never just ‘farm’ animals.

BUT we also had lots of fur… NOT really a clean house.

SO I think you can see where I am going here :-)

My whole family recently moved to a NEW house…

Very beautiful by the way… It’s in the woods, and our neighbor has chickens so I woke up to the sound of a crowing rooster.

Back to the house thing..

My wife isn’t fond of animal hair… She wants our pets to have certain spots where they go in the house.

I am of the let them roam free opinion.

—————————————
But Who cleans?
—————————————

We both do, although she does slightly more than me.

So we are currently ..in discussions……… ……… ……..

I get the dog hair and dirt thing, but Lewis really does like the couch. He wants to be where we are.

She seems to think that he can spend most of his time in the big new boot room.

———————
What to do?
———————

I you have any ideas I would love to hear them.

Feel free to post your comments - click the link below!

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. Who would have thought that animals can be a ‘point of contention’ in a marriage, but they can.
For those of you who are single, make sure you match with an animal compatible person… PLUS those out there that don’t get the dog and cat thing really aren’t worth being with anyway.. :-)

A dog murderer?

Re: A dog murderer?

//////////////////////////////////////////////

Hello fellow readers.

Yesterday was one of those crazy, emotional draining days.

And it ended with a very uncomfortable situation-
a pet was aprehended by the SPCA.

He was critically ill.

The owner refused to have him euthanized.

He was suffering, and it was not acceptable to have
him die in pain ” on his own”.

The owner didn’t agree-

I was called a dog murderer.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I have been called MANY things before- but in 15 years
this is a first.

I would appreciate your thoughts.

You can make a posting here…

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

P.S. I understand how emotionally attached people are
to their pets- I lost my own dog to cancer.

BUT - when the time comes, will you make the right
decision for your pet?
